Donald Cummings Jr.

Don founded Blue Haven Capital in 2006 to bring institutional-grade portfolio management to individuals and small foundations rather than banks. He leads the firm’s fixed income work — the bond and CD ladders, cash strategy, and the parts of a portfolio meant to be dependable rather than exciting.

He came to that work the long way. Don spent five years on the floor of the Chicago Board Options Exchange before moving into the institutional fixed income area of a firm that was subsequently bought by Morgan Stanley.

From 1990 until 2006 his career was spent in the institutional fixed income markets. His clients were mainly in Chicago, New York and Boston, and included firms such as The Northern Trust, Value Line, State Street Bank and Trust, and Brown Brothers Harriman. His product expertise covered corporate bonds along with tax-exempt and taxable municipal bonds.

In the mid-1990s Don became one of the leading authorities and top traders of tax-exempt municipal housing bonds in the country. He has taken numerous professional courses ranging from bond futures and options to currency hedging, and has been quoted in both the local and national press.

Today Blue Haven serves clients nationwide, along with a number of American expatriates living in Western Europe.

A University of Wisconsin–Madison graduate, Don lives in Chicago. He is an avid runner and swimmer and a former triathlete who competed in dozens of races ranging from sprint distance to Ironman. He travels frequently to see family, friends and clients.
